Glenn Frey
The Eagles were formed in 1971 by musicians Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner. Tonight, the legendary rock band will be honored at the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors, along with Al Pacino, Mavis Staples, and pianist Martha Argerich. Over the course of their illustrious career, The Eagles have won six Grammy Awards, five AMAs, and have come out with six number one albums. Earlier this year, one of the band’s founding members, Glenn Frey, passed away of a combination of complications from pneumonia, rheumatoid arthritis, and acute ulcerative colitis. In a statement released after his death, Frey’s family said, “Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.” Frey, a singer, songwriter and actor, was the lead singer and frontman for the Eagles (though Don Henley later took on this role, too) and sang lead vocals on songs like “Take It Easy”, “Tequila Sunrise”, and “Heartache Tonight”. He also played guitar for the band. Frey took on a solo career after The Eagles split in the 1980s, and recorded Top 40 hits like “True Love”, “Soul Searchin'”, and “Livin’ Right”. Frey was married twice over the course of his life: first to artist Janie Beggs from 1983 to 1988, and then to choreographer Cindy Millican in 1990.
