The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced two men arrested by the State Security Service (SSS) to life imprisonment following their conviction for membership of the proscribed Boko Haram terrorist organisation and related offences.
The convicts, Abba Mustapha and Bukar Ibrahim, both from Borno State, pleaded guilty to charges bordering on membership of and support for the terrorist organisation, as well as concealing information concerning its activities.
Delivering judgment, Justice Salim Ibrahim convicted the two men on the charges and sentenced each of them to life imprisonment on the first count.
The court also imposed a 20-year prison term on each convict on the second count.
The convictions formed part of the Federal Government’s latest phase of mass trials involving persons accused of terrorism-related offences.
The exercise commenced on Thursday and is being conducted simultaneously across several courtrooms of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Several judges of the court have been assigned to handle the cases, including Justices Salim Ibrahim, James Omotosho, Binta Nyako, Emeka Nwite, Obiora Egwuatu, Hauwa Yilwa, Joyce Abdulmalik and Peter Lifu.
At least 34 suspects were listed for proceedings before Justice Ibrahim, while another 25 were scheduled to appear before Justice Lifu as the Federal Government continued the prosecution of terrorism-related cases.
Mustapha and Ibrahim’s cases were concluded after they admitted the offences levelled against them, leading the court to convict and sentence them.
