The Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim, has said stiff
punishment, including capital sentence, can curb
kidnapping-for-ransom in the country.

He noted that criminals were not deterred from the nefarious act
because of the slow judicial process and the light prison terms
handed down to offenders by the court.

Speaking at the monthly IG conference on Wednesday in Abuja,
Idris fingered youths in communities along Kaduna-Abuja highway for
the high incidence of abduction in the area.

He therefore asked the Niger, Kaduna states and Federal Capital
Territory Commissioners of Police to visit and relate with the
community members on the dangers of kidnapping.

He also admonished all state CPs to continually raid all black
spots and criminal hideouts in their jurisdictions.

The IG added, “One of the challenges we have in kidnapping is
the issue of punishment. Because these boys see that we parade
suspects before the media; they don’t see them going to court; they
don’t see them sentenced to death; that is why they feel more
relaxed.

“I think we need to have more stringent punishment for
perpetrators; that’s the only way we can make headway against
kidnapping because they are looking at it like a joke, and that is
why some of our youths are getting into it.

“Like I told members of the National Assembly, if we can get a
law to check it, you are going to see a lot of changes.”

Idris used the occasion to announce a posthumous promotion for
Inspector Idris Musa, who was killed by Boko Haram insurgents in
Kano last Sunday.

He stressed that the police, under his command, would continue
to reward police personnel who performed excellently well in their
duties.

The IG urged state commands to initiate a reward system for
personnel under them, noting that policemen, who died during
operation for acts of gallantry, would be given posthumous
promotions.

The IG warned against illegal arrest and detention as well as
extortion by policemen, directing state CPs to set up special teams
to go after corrupt personnel.
