A businessman, Ezeanwu Ifeanyi, who allegedly imported a
container load of fake drugs into the country was yesterday
remanded in prison by Justice Hadiza Rabiu-Shagari of a Federal
High Court in Lagos.
The remand order was a sequel to Ifeanyi’s arraignment before
the court by the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration
Control (NAFDAC) on a count charge over the alleged offence.
Upon his arraignment, the accused person denied the offence.
In view of his plea, NDLEA’s lawyer, Umar Shamaki, while seeking
for a trial date asked the court to remand the accused person in
prison.
In his submissions, defence lawyer, Chinwobi Adiele, drew the
court’s attention to his client’s pending bail application. He also
requested that the court should direct the prosecution to serve him
with the proof of evidence.
In his response, Shamaki said he has just been served with the
application and that he needed time to respond to the
application.
After listening to the submissions of parties, Justice Shagari
adjourned the matter to March 16, for the hearing of the accused
person’s bail application.
The judge while adjourning the matter also ordered that the
accused person be remanded in prison custody pending when his bail
application will be heard.
