The Presidency has described the call for a two-day boycott of
court activities by the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) as the beauty
of democracy.

Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Special Adviser on Media
and Publicity, Femi Adesina yesterday said the development was not
strange, as Nigeria was practicing a democracy, which espouses all
the norms of freedom.

“A free country,” was the terse reply from the presidential
media aide to The Guardian’s SMS seeking reaction to the NBA
directive. He did not give further explanation.

Also, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba
Shehu said the issue falls within the purview of the Attorney
General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
“The Attorney General may answer this question,” he said, while
reacting to the development yesterday.

The NBA, had after its National Executive Committee (NEC)
meeting in Abuja on Monday, called on its members nationwide to
boycott all courts for two days.

The action was to protest against the suspension of the Chief
Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen, by President Muhammadu
Buhari. A statement at the end of the meeting reads in part: “NEC
resolved that members should boycott all courts for the next two
days starting from January 29 to 31 2019.”
