The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences
Commission has said it will discontinue cases found out to be
outside its jurisdiction or already being handled by the Economic
Financial Crimes Commission.

The Chairman of the ICPC, Prof Bolaji Owasanoye, said the move
was aimed at avoiding conflict with other anti-corruption
agencies.

He said the commission had received petitions that are outside
its jurisdiction.

According to him, the ICPC and EFCC are not competing with each
other as they were both established by the government to fight
corruption.

He said, “A lot of things that don’t have to do with us are sent
to us. We need to stop the practice of jumping everywhere for
whatever reason.

“This can distract the agency from its primary objectives. We
are not in a competition with the EFCC because we are both
independent bodies fighting corruption. We cannot go after the same
cases at the same time; it is duplication of effort and a waste of
resources.”

Spokesperson for the commission, Rasheedat Okoduwa, told our
correspondent in Abuja on Friday that the body would not work on
any petition being handled by the EFCC.

She said, “There is a new petition format with guidelines on the
kind of petition we treat on our website.”
