Teach them well and let them lead the way…
The Fabinho injury was quite accurately described by Jürgen
Klopp as “the last thing we needed”. With Joel Matip on the
sidelines as well, this leaves Joe Gomez as Liverpool
FC’s only senior-squad centre-back. Not optimal.
And with the pickle we find ourselves in, the Hugmeister has
backed three youth-team products to fill the many pairs of shoes
laying about in the middle of defence:
“Rhys Williams did really well – that was really good. He was
commanding, he was chatty – it was a really good game from him. The
only problem we have now is that there are four days until West
Ham, and every day you [the media] will make a story about him and
he’ll have to deal with that as well. He is a talent, he is 19. 2

Phillips [for the Premier League] – he’s a centre-back. Billy
[Koumetio] – he will train too.”
Rhys Williams has looked solid thus far, and will likely
continue holding the fort while we await the return of Matip and
Fabinho. The thought of Nat Phillips trying to operate in the high
line we’ve been using this year sent some shiver down my back, so
let’s hope it never comes to that. Or we could go to back three.
This is the footballing embodiment of scooping water out from a
boat with a hole in it. Let’s hope we last long enough for the
coast guard to deliver our returning players.
