The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced its plans to initiate immediate action to resume work on several abandoned key projects across the territory.
The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, expressed the need to diversify funding sources beyond the national budget to curb the issue of abandoned projects in the region.
During a meeting with contractors in Abuja on Monday, Wike expressed concern about the pace of abandoned projects across the territory and stressed that there should be no justification for leaving projects incomplete. He pledged to mobilize contractors handling short-term projects back to their respective sites, emphasizing that diversifying funding sources would help prevent contractors from being owed and consequently prevent project abandonment.
Wike highlighted the significance of road infrastructure, especially road networks, in the city’s development. He emphasized the importance of funding strategies to ensure that projects are completed without delays or setbacks.
“We are determined, seriously, to make sure that every contractor goes back to sites. Not just going back to sites, but with direct supervision from my office and that of the Minister of State,” Wike stated.
The FCTA has identified key projects for immediate intervention, including the Abuja Metro Line and the resurfacing of road networks in Garki 1, Wuse 1, and parts of Maitama. The Minister noted that there are specific orders to promptly complete the rail project, as President Buhari expressed his intention to ride on the Metroline.
Addressing concerns about the lack of proper supervision hindering infrastructure development, Wike assured that his administration would uphold high standards. He warned against compromising quality and stated his commitment to restructuring the funding approach for projects. This restructuring includes tapping into internally generated revenue and not solely depending on the national budget.
Wike emphasized his dedication to achieving tangible results and assured that projects would not be contracted without sufficient funding. He emphasized the importance of quality and efficiency in executing projects to ensure the sustained development of the Federal Capital Territory.
