In a fiery response to recent statements by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has launched a scathing critique, accusing Wike of corruption, electoral malpractice, and authoritarian behavior.
Adeyanju’s reply came after Wike’s public remarks targeting him and other critics who have challenged the Minister’s policies and decisions.
Adeyanju, who has consistently positioned himself as a voice against government overreach, detailed his grievances in a statement highlighting Wike’s alleged misconduct, including land appropriation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). “Our only crime is that we have decided to challenge him, to do constructive criticism of some of his anti-people policies,” Adeyanju declared.
The activist claimed that Wike, in his rebuttal, did not refute the core allegations of land grabbing and instead rationalized giving appropriated land to friends. “These are the kind of people ruling our country — people who should be in jail for corruption and electoral fraud,” Adeyanju asserted, further emphasizing Wike’s contentious track record during his tenure as Governor of Rivers State.
Adeyanju also addressed Wike’s allegation that he had previously sought support from the Minister for a position within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). “All Nigerians know that I resigned from politics eight years ago,” Adeyanju countered, adding that his activism has often placed him at odds with political figures, resulting in numerous detentions and physical confrontations.
Referring to his longstanding criticism of Wike, Adeyanju remarked, “He [Wike] has this God complex. Whenever you challenge him, he will call and threaten the relationship.” Adeyanju also highlighted that despite their past interactions, he has remained steadfast in holding Wike accountable.
The activist provided a detailed account of political dynamics within the PDP, recounting how Wike’s decision-making, particularly his backing of different party members for leadership roles, had often been self-serving. “Wike’s only address is the looting of public resources,” Adeyanju said, calling out what he described as Wike’s lack of integrity and contradictory stance.
Further criticizing Wike’s shifting alliances, Adeyanju referenced Wike’s pivot from condemning the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “cancer” to now working alongside the party. “This is the same Wike, speaking from both sides of his mouth,” Adeyanju commented, framing the Minister’s actions as opportunistic.
Adeyanju concluded by reiterating his disillusionment with political systems and reaffirming his commitment to activism. “I have seen that they [politicians] can never change. They do not play by the books. Even when I was in the PDP, I was always criticizing them, and Wike himself knows this.”
