On Monday, a group of disc jockeys (DJs) in Katsina State staged a protest at Kangiwa Square, calling for an end to the eight-month ban imposed on them by the State Hisbah Board.
The DJs appealed to the state government to allow them to conduct their lawful business without interference and demanded the return of their musical equipment, worth millions of Naira, which had been seized by the state religious police.
The protesters, carrying placards, expressed their frustration over the prolonged seizure of their property and the impact it has had on their livelihoods. The ban, which has been in place for over eight months, has prevented them from performing at ceremonies, parties, and other social events.
The DJs’ protest coincided with the official commissioning of the Kofar Soro-Kofar Guga Road dualisation project by Governor Dikko Radda at the Kangiwa Square in Katsina Metropolis. The 1.2-kilometre road project, which was initially awarded by the previous administration led by Aminu Masari, was flagged off by Governor Radda on March 13, 2024.
The protesters urged the state government to intervene and ensure the return of their confiscated equipment, emphasizing the importance of their profession in providing entertainment and livelihood for many individuals in the state. They also called for a clear and transparent process for regulating their activities, rather than an outright ban.
