Strong indications have emerged that the Deputy Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Aminu Alkali, may soon be replaced following a prolonged illness that has kept him away from official duties for over nine months.
Multiple sources within the Taraba State House of Assembly and senior government circles confirmed that lawmakers have begun rallying behind the current Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Alhaji Hamman Adama, as Alkali’s potential successor.
Although no formal impeachment or replacement motion has been filed, insiders say that discreet discussions are ongoing to activate the constitutional process for his removal.
“The deputy governor has been bedridden for months. We can no longer afford to operate without a fully active deputy in such a critical role,” a senior legislative source told TheNigeriaLawyer.
Despite mounting speculations, the state government has moved swiftly to deny any ongoing succession arrangements.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Special Adviser to Governor Agbu Kefas on Media and Digital Communication, Emmanuel Bello, dismissed the reports as “fake news.”
“No one has nominated anyone to be Deputy Governor to Dr. Agbu Kefas. Disregard any fake news,” Bello stated.
However, a senior official from the deputy governor’s office, who requested anonymity, admitted that internal conversations were indeed taking place regarding a possible transition, citing the need for effective governance and continuity.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official word from the deputy governor’s office about Alkali’s health status or the alleged plot to remove him.
