Nigeria has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council after securing 172 votes in an election conducted by the UN General Assembly on October 13, 2026.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi.

According to the statement, Nigeria was elected alongside 14 other countries to serve a three-year term on the 47-member council, beginning January 1, 2027, and ending December 31, 2029.

The United Nations Human Rights Council is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide, addressing human rights violations and making recommendations on how member states can improve human rights conditions.

The Federal Government described Nigeria’s election as a reflection of international confidence in the country’s commitment to advancing human rights and strengthening global efforts to protect fundamental freedoms.

It expressed appreciation to UN member states for their support during the election.

The government also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to constructive dialogue, international cooperation and mutual respect in its engagement with other members of the council.

According to the statement, Nigeria will work closely with fellow council members to strengthen international initiatives aimed at promoting and protecting human rights across the world.

Nigeria’s three-year tenure is expected to provide an opportunity for the country to contribute to discussions and initiatives addressing human rights challenges at the international level.
