In short: If you’re a Nigerian living abroad without a BVN or a Nigerian bank account, you can still invest in the Dangote Refinery IPO on Bamboo through a Nominee Beneficiary account. You’ll need a residential address in Nigeria and a passport, such as your Nigerian passport. Verify your identity, fund your USD wallet through Misan by Bamboo or a card, and subscribe.

Not having a BVN or a Nigerian bank account used to be a hard stop for Nigerians abroad who wanted in on a Nigerian offer. It no longer is. If you’re Nigerian, living outside the country, and have never gotten around to opening a BVN, Bamboo now lets you invest in the Dangote Refinery IPO through a Nominee Beneficiary account, an alternative route built for exactly this situation.

This guide walks through who this route is for, exactly what you need as a Nigerian in the diaspora, and the steps to apply, based on Bamboo’s official process. It is general information, not investment advice. If you do have a BVN and a Nigerian bank account, the standard route is simpler, and our guide on how to invest in the Dangote Refinery IPO on Bamboo covers that path. If you are a non-Nigerian African looking to invest, a separate guide covers that route.

What is a Nominee Beneficiary account?

A Nominee Beneficiary account, also known as Bamboo’s NGX Nominee Account, is an alternative way for Nigerians without a BVN or a Nigerian bank account to invest in NGX IPOs on Bamboo. Under this structure, Bamboo holds the investment through its own nominee account on the NGX and registers you as the beneficiary, in line with the account’s terms and conditions. You still own the economic benefit of the shares; Bamboo simply holds them on your behalf as the nominee.

This is what makes it possible to skip the two things that normally gate Nigerian investing: a BVN and a Nigerian bank account.

What you need

  • Your Nigerian international passport (or another supported passport, if applicable to you).
  • Your Nigerian address.
  • A phone number you can receive a verification code on.
  • A way to fund a USD wallet, such as a Misan virtual account, or a USD debit or credit card.
  • At least $100, the minimum deposit to fund your USD wallet.

Step by step: how to apply

  1. Download the Bamboo app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Tap “Invest in Dangote IPO” on the app’s landing screen, or start creating your account and look for the same option.
  3. Select your citizenship. As a Nigerian, this will typically be Nigeria, using your Nigerian passport to verify your identity.
  4. Provide your address. Enter your country, state, and full Nigerian address.
  5. Verify your identity. Scan your passport, then take a clear selfie photo when prompted. Good lighting and no blur make this faster.
  6. Set a 4-digit PIN to secure your account.
  7. Provide next-of-kin details, including their name, relationship to you, and phone number.
  8. Complete your investment profile. Answer a short set of questions covering your employment, marital status, investment goal, timeline, experience, and risk tolerance. This personalises your account and is a standard part of onboarding.
  9. Wait for verification. Your account may show as under review while Bamboo checks your details. This does not usually take long, but it is a real step, not a formality, so give it a moment before assuming something has gone wrong.
  10. Fund your USD wallet. Once verified, add at least $100 to your USD wallet using Misan or a USD debit or credit card.
  11. Subscribe to the Dangote Refinery IPO. From your home screen or the Assets tab, tap the “Dangote IPO now live” banner, choose how many shares you want (minimum 10 at ₦525 each), select your payment method, and confirm.

Funding your USD wallet

You have two main ways to fund your wallet.

Misan, Bamboo’s own remittance app, lets you fund via bank transfer using a personal virtual account, in USD, GBP, EUR, or CAD. It carries small deposit fees depending on currency, for example around 0.1% on GBP and EUR transfers and 0.5% on USD transfers, each with a modest minimum and maximum. Your virtual account is usually ready within about an hour, sometimes longer depending on verification checks. For a Nigerian abroad who already earns in one of these currencies, this is often the simplest way to get money into your Bamboo wallet without an unnecessary conversion.

A USD debit or credit card through Paystack or Flutterwave is the faster option if you already have one, though card funding carries a processing fee from the payment provider, typically around 2.9%.

Either way, funding your wallet is a separate step from investing. Subscribing to the Dangote Refinery IPO itself carries zero commission on Bamboo; the fees above belong to the funding method you choose to get money into your wallet, not to the investment.

What happens after you apply

Once you’ve subscribed, there’s nothing further to do until allotment. Our guide on what happens after you apply for the Dangote Refinery IPO covers the full timetable, but in brief: after the offer closes, the SEC clears the Basis of Allotment, your shares are credited, and if you were allotted fewer shares than you applied for, or none, the difference is returned to your Bamboo wallet automatically.

If you ever want to move money from your USD wallet back to your bank account, be aware that withdrawals carry a $45 fee and typically take five to seven business days to arrive, so plan around that rather than treating your wallet as instantly accessible.

A word on getting this right

Only invest money you can afford to have tied up and, ultimately, to lose. Never borrow to fund an application, and always apply through the official Bamboo app rather than any third party claiming to help you “get in” from abroad. Our Don’ts of Investing series covers these principles in more depth.
