In short: Cameroon is a supported country for the Dangote Refinery IPO, so residents can invest on Bamboo through a Nominee Beneficiary account, no BVN or Nigerian bank account needed. You’ll need your Cameroonian passport and your local address, then fund a USD wallet and subscribe at ₦525 a share, minimum 10 shares. This is general information, not advice.
If you’re based in Cameroon and wondering whether you can get in on the Dangote Refinery IPO, the answer is yes. Cameroon is one of more than 50 African countries where Bamboo currently supports investing in the offer, through a route built specifically for people who don’t have, and don’t need, a Nigerian BVN or bank account.
This guide walks through exactly how to apply from Cameroon, step by step. It is general information, not investment advice. If you’re checking on behalf of someone in a different country, our guide on which African countries can invest covers the full list.
Yes, Cameroon is supported
Bamboo’s Nominee Beneficiary account, also known as the NGX Nominee Account, lets Bamboo hold your investment through its own nominee account on the Nigerian Exchange and register you as the beneficiary. That’s what makes it possible to invest without a BVN or a Nigerian bank account, and Cameroon is one of the countries where this is currently available.
To apply, you’ll need a residential address in Cameroon and an international passport from any supported African country. For most people in Cameroon, that simply means your Cameroonian passport, though if you happen to hold a passport from another supported African country instead, that works too, since your address and your passport don’t have to be from the same country.
What you need
- Your Cameroonian passport (or a passport from another supported African country, if that applies to you).
- Your residential address in Cameroon.
- A phone number you can receive a verification code on.
- A way to fund a USD wallet, such as a Misan virtual account, or a USD debit or credit card.
- At least $100, the minimum deposit to fund your USD wallet.
Step by step: how to apply from Cameroon
- Download the Bamboo app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Look for “Invest in Dangote IPO” on the app’s landing screen, or start creating an account and the same option will appear.
- Select your citizenship. Choose Cameroon, or whichever supported country issued your passport.
- Enter your address in Cameroon, including your region, city or town, and full address.
- Verify your identity. Scan your passport, then take a selfie when prompted. Good lighting and a steady, unblurred shot make this quicker.
- Set a 4-digit PIN to secure your account.
- Provide next-of-kin details: their name, how they’re related to you, and a phone number for them.
- Complete your investment profile. A short set of questions on your employment, marital status, investing goal, timeline, experience, and risk tolerance. Standard onboarding, not something specific to you.
- Wait for verification. Your account may briefly show as under review while Bamboo checks your details. This is a real step, so give it a little time.
- Fund your USD wallet with at least $100, using Misan or a USD card.
- Subscribe to the Dangote Refinery IPO. Find the “Dangote IPO now live” banner on your home screen or in the Assets tab, choose your number of shares (minimum 10, at ₦525 each), select your payment method, and confirm.
Funding your wallet from Cameroon
You have two main options for getting money into your USD wallet.
Misan, Bamboo’s remittance app, lets you fund by bank transfer using a personal virtual account, in USD, GBP, EUR, or CAD. If you hold euros, this is often the most natural route from Cameroon, since the CFA franc is pegged to the euro and many people in the CEMAC zone already have some access to euro-denominated accounts or transfers. Deposit fees are small, around 0.1% on GBP and EUR transfers and 0.5% on USD, each with a modest minimum and maximum. Your virtual account is usually ready within about an hour.
A USD debit or credit card, processed through Paystack or Flutterwave, is the quicker option if you already have one, with a processing fee of around 2.9%. If your card is denominated in CFA francs rather than one of the currencies above, check within the app whether it’s accepted for this funding method, since support can vary by provider.
Subscribing to the Dangote Refinery IPO itself is free either way, zero commission. The fees above belong to whichever funding method you choose, not to the investment.
What happens after you apply
Once you’ve subscribed, there’s nothing more to do until allotment. After the offer closes, the SEC clears the Basis of Allotment, your shares are credited to your account, and if you were allotted fewer shares than you applied for, or none, the shortfall is returned automatically to your Bamboo wallet. Our guide on everything you need to know about the Dangote Refinery IPO covers the full timetable. Withdrawing from your USD wallet later carries a $45 fee and typically takes five to seven business days.
A word on getting this right
Only invest money you can afford to have tied up and, ultimately, to lose. Never borrow to fund an application, and always apply through the official Bamboo app rather than any third party claiming to help you get in. Our Don’ts of Investing series covers these principles in more depth.
